Legal advice for women

2011 was a great year for our Legal Advice Clinic, graciously funded by the Alberta Law Foundation.  Since October we have added one more Family Law Clinic per month to help meet the need of women in Calgary. The year 2012 will open with two Non-Family and five Family Legal Advice Clinics every month.

This year we saw over 200 women in 63 clinics. In the past 12 months, 15 dedicated volunteer lawyers have been a big help for all the women accessing the clinics.

Some clinic highlights:

· In 2011, 209 women received free Legal Advice.

· 99% of women who attended the clinics felt the lawyer listened to them carefully and that  the lawyer understood their situation.

· 98% know what their next step will be.

· 100% would recommend the Legal Advice Clinic to a friend

Here’s what women wrote about our lawyers:

She is a compassionate lawyer who understood my situation and gave me

appropriate advice”

Gave me confident steps to move forward. Thank you.”

Excellent information and suggestions and additional resource information specific to my situation. “

“Lawyer was really sympathetic to my needs and to the situation, very helpful”

Thank you so much for your continued support!

  1. Hi, I am wondering if I need to fill out a certain form to have my family law case, moved to civil court, as there are no dependent children involved, and everything else about my divorce would either fall under criminal or civil court

    1. Hi Tamisha, please call us at 403 264 1155. Or, you can email info@womenscentrecalgary.org. I hope we are able to help you with what you need — but please note that most of our services occur in-person at our building in Calgary (Bridgeland).

  2. Hello,
I’ve recently been aware of a bench warrant out for my arrest regarding a missed court date regarding driving without insurance charge. I was hoping that I could have some assistance with finding a lawyer to help me navigate from steps I can take to deal with this.

  3. I’m seeking an interim order against Children Family Services because I believe they unfairly expedited the process of reunification in response to my adoption intentions. The caseworker handling the case mislead me to believe the reunification process would be slow and the child would not be placed in bio mom’s care indefinitely in as little as a month from them advising me of reunification beginning. I don’t believe this is in the best interest of the child to be taken from the home she was raised in since infancy, in as little as month, based solely on 2-3 hours of supervised visits.
